About

Why Hospital Songs?

Hospital Songs is a blog about Medicine 2.0. I focus on advances in social media and technology, patient empowerment and education, and the best of the Toronto med 2.0 community.

First time here? Check out the Best Of.

If you’re new to Medicine 2.0, I urge you to read my short primer: What is Medicine 2.0?

If you’re looking for good songs about hospitals, I’ve got a page for that too.

Who Am I?

My name is Elizabeth. Effy, for short.

I’m a twenty-something biomedical engineer by training, currently affiliated with the University of Toronto, Bloorview Kids Rehab Hospital, and the University Health Network. I’ve been writing fiction since I was less than five years old, and been a blogger since 2002.

My credentials include Co-President of the Club for Undergraduate Biomedical Engineering (CUBE) at the University of Toronto (2008-2009) and Skule Sisters Mentorship Program Liaison of Engineering Hi-Skule Committee (2007-2009).

My current research interests are pediatric rehabilitation engineering (particularly, access technologies pertaining to emotion), health information technology, and medical humanities.

My past research experience covers molecular genetics, stem cells, biomechanics, and nanotechnology. I have also worked with the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering and Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.

I enjoy Britpop, early 20th century American lit, all things antique/vintage 1920s-1960s, (living by) the sea, swimming (both in and out of the sea), and eggs (alas, nothing to do with seas). I’m passionate about (very) good communication, personal development, youth mentorship, and responsible use of technology.
